Let me begin with the PURPLE CHOK – that’s what most people remember me for, so let me just serve it to you, before even getting to know me. Purple fills up most of my world and is the color of most of the stuff I own. I simple love the color.
I am 29 years old. I’ve been living in Odense for some years now, and I am loving it!
My name is Ranuka [the first A is pronounced as an E]. To pronounce it correctly, imagine it written like this: [Renúka]. The mispronunciation of my name is very common – it happens every time I meet someone new, so don’t worry – I am used to it, and it’s alright, actually. I love my name! I like that it is different, and that it challenges new people. I believe it gives people a good sense of who I am as a person. The name gives me a unique twist and defines my background as well, since its origin is a reincarnation of a Hindu goddess (but I’m not religious at all). I am a child of two Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka, who came to Denmark about 33 years ago.
Background
I was born and raised in a small town called Vejen, where my parents still live. Being a child of refugee parents influences how you become as a person. I grew up living in the dilemma of two cultures all the time, and I believe that I’ve found a way of combining the best aspects of my Tamil as well as the Danish culture.
I once believed that I’ll work and live abroad because of my intercultural understanding and background. Being brought up between two different cultures and speak two different languages and have close family members who migrated to all parts of Europe. As the first step, I started living in Sweden in my gap year, working as a project coordinator for a Nordic project sponsored by the European Commission. And during my studies, I took a semester abroad to study Communication management in Thailand. But the experiences only had me realizing my love to Denmark as the country I grow up in and appreciating the possibilities I have here.
Travelling and being open to cultural diversity, based on my own experiences, led me to work voluntarily with refugees in DFUNK (The Danish Refugee Youth Council) on Funen. DFUNK is a volunteer organization which organizes political and social activities for young refugees in Denmark. It means a lot for me to have a voluntary work beside my full-time job. I feel that it is the least I can do, to give back to the people who are in a similar situation, as I was growing up in a country with refugee parents.
My life ATM
I am a very social person, so when I’m not working at DFUNK, I like to spend my spare time with my friends and family, creating memories. I am the kind of person who feels enriched by helping and giving to others, and by simply being available and listening – it doesn’t have to be a friend or a family member, but anyone who might need a shoulder to lean on.
And then if I get time, and make the right priorities I love to be active, and once in a while, I go to the gym, where I usually attend classes such as Bodypump, Zumba, Indoor cycling etc.
I also like to follow the newest trend in social media and the gadget universe, because of the amazing impact the digital age has and how we share the impressions of the world, and how it affects us. In the gadget world, I especially like artificial intelligence (AI) centered smart solutions which make your everyday life easier. As the first step, I invested in an Amazon Echo Dot, which has become my lovely informative friend at home.
